How I Potty Trained Elijah in 1 Week
So before I start, Elijah is 2 years old and has been ready to be potty trained since he turned 1. I, however, wasn’t ready due to the extremely rough past year we had. Yeah yeah I know, no excuses right? But when you think about it, if you try and potty train when you yourself aren’t ready, it will make potty training your little that much harder on both them and yourself.
So now that I got that out of the way, let me tell you how I personally potty trained Eli. Keep in mind, every mama has her own secrets to success and you can definitely tweak this method however you see fit.
Seeing as he was already ready to be potty trained, he was at that point where he didn’t like his pull-up to be wet or have poop, like to the point where if he had poop, he’d waddle and absolutely refuse to sit down 🤣
One day, I just told him “you know what? You are not a baby. You are a big boy and are more than ready to be potty trained. We are doing this whether you want to or not. We will be wearing big boy chonies everyday and will ONLY wear baby chonies (pull-ups) for bedtime and bye bye.” He said yes mom, but those first 2 days were brutal. They started out ok, but by 10 am each day, he decided to try and hide to go poop, or would pee himself and would think it was ok. The 1st time he peed himself, I literally heard him tell Isabella “yeah sister. It’s peepee. But it’s ok. Don’t touch it.” because she was reaching for his pee soaked pants 🤦🏻♀️. Y’all, I just about lost it over the fact that he thought it was ok to pee himself 🙄 lol
After that I was like no, we are setting some more rules. Originally, the only rules I had was he needed to use the toilet every 30 minutes and wear his big boy chonies all day.
My new rules were:
- use the bathroom every 30 minutes. If he doesn’t go when I take him, then he needs to be taken again in 15 minutes, so as not to go too long between potty breaks.
- Wear chonies all day, w| the exception of nap time, outings & bedtime.
- If he has an accident, I show him his underwear and ask him what is in it and why did it happen? This gives him a chance to explain why/ how he had an accident.
- If he has an accident on purpose, (i.e because he didn’t want to use the toilet, wanted to fight with me or tried to hide) then I take away a toy he wants to play with, or don’t let him get to pick out a movie or no special snacks.
After I set these ground rules, all of a sudden he started using the bathroom when I told him to, and by day 4 he was telling me when he needed to use the bathroom. By day 6, I started letting him wear his chonies on outings and we have had no accidents. Oh and he has also been keeping his pull-ups dry during nap time 🙌🏼 it’s now been a little over a week and we have had no more accidents since day 2. Now the only thing left to do is work on night time potty training.
One more secret that I have to help w| potty training is my essential oils. I made Elijah a roller bottle using Cypress oil because it is said to help control their bladder. I just roll it over his bladder randomly throughout the day and before outings + bedtime to help him control his bladder. If you make this roller for your little as well, I suggest also adding Balance to help keep them grounded because potty training definitely comes with tons of emotions lol
*Little side note: I know that pull-ups can be confusing for them, since they feel close in likeness to diapers, which is why I only allow them for bedtime. If you don’t feel safe putting them in chonies during the day, feel free to put them in pull-ups, cause I know I have lol*
Good luck mamas & happy potty training!!
Until next time,
Xo Mama Unfiltered 🖤
